Gerrard tells Klopp what to do after the harsh defeat against Real Madrid

Steven Gerrard has admitted Liverpool have to do a lot of “soul-searching” and told Jurgen Klopp what to do after suffering one of the most painful defeats he has suffered in recent years at the hands of Real Madrid.

The Reds will be knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 unless they secure a miraculous victory at the Santiago Bernabeu after losing 5-2 at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The hosts went 2-0 up after 14 minutes, but Los Blancos showed all their European experience and personality in marshalling the attack and scoring five goals.

Liverpool came into the game on the back of back-to-back Premier League victories over Everton and Newcastle, so their early lead against Real Madrid seemed to confirm they were over the edge after a poor season.

But they were brought back to earth with a bang as their defensive woes were brutally exposed by the defending European champions in what Gerrard described as a “reality test” for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Speaking in the BT Sport studio, the Anfield legend said: “They [Liverpool] got off to the perfect start, exactly what you need on a European night – start fast, get ahead and build on that. But from that moment Real Madrid came back, scored a goal very quickly – a great goal.

Gerard Klopp demanded an investigation, saying: “Since then, Real Madrid has dominated Liverpool and outperformed it for long periods. Look, I think any team, any club, if they concede five goals, there needs to be an investigation into why and how that happened. I’m sure Jurgen will do that in the coming days. I think everyone will be a little bit harsh on the back of that defeat.”

And he ended: “Liverpool do not concede five goals here at Anfield, and if they do, it is very rare. There will be a little soul-searching, a little looking in the mirror.”
